   “Assessing a New Treatment for Age-Related Macular Degeneration”

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of blindness in the developed world, results from a still-incurable disease process that causes dysfunction in the retina.  Although only a small area is typically affected, there is great impact on vision:  patients experience a blind spot wherever they look, leading to an inability to read, drive, recognize faces and discern objects as the disease progresses.  A promising new treatment uses gentle laser light to reshape the cornea, bending light rays away from diseased areas of the retina and onto healthy areas.  This redirection of light causes an immediate improvement in vision, and generates ongoing improvement due to neuroadaptation.  Dr. Mallen, an ophthalmologist, will discuss the disease from a clinical perspective; Prof. Berry, a neuroscientist, will explain the basic vision science underlying the treatment; and the Rev. John Frederick, who’s had the procedure in both eyes, will provide a patient’s perspective.

   “Engineering Microbes to Sustain Planet Earth”

Advances in synthetic biology, such as the development of engineered metabolisms, biosensors and genetic circuits, have revolutionized mankind’s ability to monitor and control cellular functions in the manufacture of chemicals and materials.  With these new tools, previously unsolvable problems in energy, the environment, industry and sustainability, can now be addressed. Following years of study at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Rockefeller, MIT and the Whitehead Institute, José Avalos is well-positioned to take us into the world of microbial engineering.  He will explain how it is transforming production of:  the chemicals we use; the fuels we burn; the clothes we wear; the food we eat; and the materials we employ.

Ahmad Greene-Hayes is a doctoral student in the Department of Religion at Princeton University in the Religion in the Americas subfield, and an interdisciplinary scholar pursuing graduate certificates in African American Studies and Gender and Sexuality Studies. His research interests include Africana religions; gender, sexuality and religion; Black Pentecostalism; Black Queer Studies; folk and popular religions; and American and Africana religious histories, specifically in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He is the recipient of numerous fellowships and awards. In addition, Ahmad is an essayist and his public commentary on issues of race, gender, sexuality, Black politics and religion are widely published. He is also the creator of #BlackChurchSex on Twitter, a progressive digital conversation on gender and sexuality in the contemporary life of the Black church. Most recently, in 2018, he founded the graduate student led, “Africana Religious History Working Group,” an intellectual community for doctoral students of African descent who study African American and Africana religious histories broadly construed, across institutions and varying subfields of study.

Lieutenant Johnathan Falcone is an active duty Surface Warfare Officer in the US Navy, and a Master in Public Affairs candidate at the Woodrow Wilson School. He has served onboard USS GONZALEZ and USS JOHN S MCCAIN deploying to the 5^th, 6^th, and 7^th Fleet Areas of Responsibility. He has additional professional experience as an investment banker and UN Political Affairs Officer.

Kris Pardo, final year Princeton University graduate student in the Astrophysical Sciences PhD program, will be joining PA3 on Friday, November 2, 2018. He is from Miami, FL and received his Bachelor of Science in Physics & Mathematics from Furman University in 2014. He has also served as a Resident Graduate Student at Forbes College since 2015. His thesis has focused on ways of testing dark matter and dark energy theories with astrophysical data. At the lunch, he will talk about how we can constrain theories with extra dimensions using the recent multi-messenger gravitational wave event that LIGO observed in August 2017.
