9:30am to 3pm on Saturdays – June 22, 29; July 6, 13, 20, 27 – as well as some times during the working week.
TDI Connect (formerly Trenton Digital Initiative) provides refurbished and reprogrammed computers to Trenton Second Graders who are reading below grade level. TDI loads each used computer with educational software that helps the kids learn to read better. Seventy percent of Trenton Second Graders read below grade level! So there is quite a demand for these computers.
Mercer County College has given TDI 700 desktops and laptops this summer, and TDI needs volunteers to help with a variety of tasks:
- Carrying out detailed inventory of each of the 25 palettes of donated machines and equipment.
- Installing hard drives into laptops and desktops.
- Installing the Ubuntu operating system and other open source software - a fully documented, step-by-step, easy process.
- Preparing the machines for actual delivery (putting together machines, cables, monitors, keyboards, mice, etc.).
Volunteer sessions will take place at TDI's location: Mill One, Suite A110, 1 North Johnston Ave, Hamilton, NJ (which long-ago PA3 volunteers might have a hard time recognizing; remember this?)
Minimal computer experience required – TDI can train you! They have an easy protocol for programming the computers. It’s fun!
You are not obligated to stay the whole 9:30 AM - 3:30 PM interval, but please give at least 3 hours of your time in order to take into account the training TDI gives.
If you want to be part of a group and need a ride or are willing to drive others from campus to Mill One and back, please coordinate with Noemi de la Puente (*86 S*89), PA3 Community Service co-chair, who is rounding up volunteers from the Pace Center, and the Grad College, as well as PA3.
