Demand for fish and seafood is the world’s fastest growing protein food sector.  Indeed, the authors of the 2019 UN High Level Panel on the Oceans and Climate Change urged human transition from terrestrial to more marine-sourced foods.  But with wild stock fisheries already at their peak (and possibly beyond), how do we achieve this?  Can we really build a healthier environment and have our fish and eat it, too?  Responsible open ocean aquaculture offers solutions.  With decades of experience in tackling these issues, aquaculture pioneer, Neil Sims, p’17, from his operations base in Kona, Hawaii, will present:  a history of open ocean aquaculture; current commercial incentives that are driving it; and the technical innovations Ocean-Era employs to balance marine protein demand with environmental concerns.   There will be ample time for Q & A, with priority given to viewer questions sent in advance to:  propellers@princetonaaa.org.

“How AI is Empowering a Non-Collision Driving World:  Possibilities, Limitations & Next Steps”  

Speaker: Artur Filipowicz, Chief Technical Officer, Soterea  

Since 2012, training of deep learning algorithms on large datasets using GPUs has powered another AI  revolution. This combination of technologies has been applied, with various levels of success, to everything  from driving to summarizing legal documents. What is behind this revolution? How can it make current  vehicles safer? What is left to do for cars to be fully autonomous? While deep learning can solve some  problems with perception and control, it introduces additional difficulties associated with data collection  and testing. Soterea has been developing collision avoidance systems for commercial vehicles since 2014.  Since that time, its systems have traveled more than 1 billion kilometers on over 100 different models of  vehicles. Its CTO, Artur Filipowicz ’17, will explain how collision avoidance technologies and AI intersect  and pave the way for autonomous vehicles. “Radio-Frequency ID in Aerospace, Life Sciences & Beyond:
Collecting, Storing, Managing and Using Intelligent Asset Data”
Managing high value assets, by simple Internet of Things (IoT) connection to “Big Data,” leads to
inefficiencies in handling large volumes of disparate data over long periods (e.g., decades). Asset
identification by reading barcode or RFID EPC and sending to “Big Data” to retrieve asset data is
likewise limiting, where Internet protocols don’t make sense due to cost, latency, or environmental
conditions. But “intelligent assets” use RFID tags with asset data permanently stored on the asset and
read by a simple RFID reader --- eliminating the need for “Big Data.” After describing how Tego delivers
its high memory RFID technology core “intelligent assets” in the aerospace and life science industries,
Rich Hollingsworth will delineate the semiconductor and software development challenges yet to be
met, before “intelligent assets” can be extended to many other industries.
