“Stereotactic Radiosurgery: A Transformation in Managing Neurologic Disease --- From Operating Room to Outpatient Treatment”
Speaker: Navid Redjal, MD, Director, Neurosurgical Oncology Capital Institute for Neurosciences, Capital Health
Stereotactic radiosurgery, the ability to precisely target lesions with focused radiation beams, is advancing the treatment of neurologic disease. Complex lesions deep within the brain, which once required high-risk surgeries, can now be treated in a non-invasive manner and on an outpatient basis. This has been a boon to patients with: brain tumors; vascular lesions; the movement disorders of Parkinson’s Disease and essential tremor; and pain conditions, such as trigeminal neuralgia --- resulting in vastly improved quality-of-life. While advances in computer processing and memory storage/retrieval speeds drove some of these breakthroughs, others came from progress in the fields of: neural networks and neuroanatomy; physics; radiology and robotics. Our speaker will describe these rapidly-evolving surgical approaches and their prospects for future use in treating myriad diseases, including psychiatric disorders.

We begin our wine tastings for 2022 virtually, with the hope that a face-to-face event becomes feasible later in the year. We look forward to participation by our "regulars," as well as those who are joining us for the first time. Salud!
Our somelier Sebastian has chosen 4 wines from Chile and 2 of them are appropriate for spicey food. The Clos Des Fous, Pour Ma Gueule Itata Red Blend 2018, Itata Valley can be paired with grilled tuna, Korean spicy chicken, and Indian Cuisine.
The other two – Odfjell Orzada Carmenere 2019, Maule Valley, and Vina Santa Carolina, Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva 2017, Maipo Valley – can be paired with steaks on the grill, beef empanadas, and lamb.
Optional Cost: $74 plus tax for four bottles of wine plus a seminar with a certified sommelier and educator. It is not required to purchase the wines or buy all 4 bottles.

“Leveraging Advances in LED Lighting
To Maximize Human Health”
Speaker: Robert Soler
Vice President, Biological Research & Technology
BIOS Lighting
Circadian rhythm, a 24-hour pattern found in all life, is governed by a central clock, tied to novel receptors in our eyes, called intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs). They influence many important aspects of human physiology: circadian synchronization; tracking of seasonal changes; acute alertness; working memory; mood and behavior. These ipRGCs contain a sky-blue photopigment called melanopsin, with peak in-vivo sensitivity ~ 490nm, a frequency highly abundant in daylight. Human physiology is set up to seek high amounts of 490nm light in the day and low amounts at night. Now that most humans spend > 90% of their lives indoors with electric light, they receive insufficient sky-blue signal --- a problem exacerbated by energy-efficient lighting, which contains even less. The resulting poor delineation of day vs night has led to myriad adverse health consequences. After walking us through the problem at large, our speaker will describe recent advances in biologically-aware lighting and how they’re being used to enhance human health and quality of life.

A new year always brings dreams and apprehensions about what lies ahead. Is 2022 the year to look at where your work life is going?
Many people are confronted with the realities of working from home, child education and care, isolation, or job loss. Some have already decided that working for themselves is a better option. But it’s complicated, and you will need a plan, whether you start a new profession, buy a franchise business, or form a new company.
