Racism and its Impact on the American City

Racism and Its Impact on the American City: Trenton as a Case Study

Tuesday, August 18, 8 p.m. via Zoom

Using our neighboring city Trenton as a case study, John Hatch '84 will present on how racism has negatively impacted the development and progress of American cities and towns and how it has shaped virtually every aspect of our built environment.

John is an architect and principal with Clarke Caton Hintz, an architecture, planning and landscape architecture firm located in Trenton, NJ.  In his more than 30 years with CCH, John has managed the design and construction of a wide array of architecturally significant buildings. These include Glen Cairn Hall at Thomas Edison State University, the new School of Business at NJCU, the restoration of Morven, the former governor’s mansion in Princeton, and multiple phases of the Roebling Complex Redevelopment in Trenton. At Princeton, he led the design team for 200 Elm, which houses Public Safety and the Office of Design and Construction; renovations and two expansions of Tower Club; and he is currently working with Terrace Club on renovations and expansions.  His work includes new and renovated facilities for colleges and universities, as well as public and independent schools; multi-unit and senior housing projects; historic and urban revitalization projects; as well as significant commercial and civil projects. All of his projects address issues of context, civic life and sustainability. In addition to his design work, John has written and lectured about such topics as historic preservation, sustainability and urban redevelopment.

He is a 32 years resident of the City of Trenton, sits on the Trenton Landmarks Commission as well as the boards of the Princeton Area Community Foundation, Passage Theatre, the NJ Capital Philharmonic and the Trenton Historical Society.  He is also a principal with Hx2 Development, which is the developer for Roebling Lofts  and Roebling Center in Trenton.

Please RSVP by sending an email to Sorina Negoiu at snegoiu@yahoo.com.

Abacus: Small Enough to Jail

Asian American Alumni Association of Princeton (A4P)

ABACUS

Join us on Zoom for a Panel Discussion on the award-winning film 'Abacus: Small Enough to Jail' with Chanterelle Sung ’00, Abacus Chief Executive Officer Jill Sung, Board member Vera Sung, and film producer Mark Mitten, moderated by Ti-Hua Chang on Wednesday, August 12th 2020, 7:00-8:30 pm EDT.  Registration button below.

ABACUS: SMALL ENOUGH TO JAIL tells the incredible story of the Chinese immigrant Sung family, owners of Abacus Federal Savings of Chinatown, New York. Accused of mortgage fraud by Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., Abacus was the only U.S. bank to face criminal charges in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis. The indictment and subsequent trial forced the Sung family to defend themselves - and their bank's legacy in the Chinatown community - over the course of a five-year legal battle. The film received a nomination for the 2018 Academy Award - Best Documentary Feature, among numerous other awards and nominations.

Hear from the Sung sisters - Jill Sung, President and CEO of Abacus Bank, Vera Sung, member of the Board of Directors of Abacus Bank, and Chanterelle Sung '00, ironically a former Assistant District Attorney within the Manhattan District Attorney's Office that prosecuted the case, as well as Mark Mitten, the film producer. The panel will be moderated by Ti-Hua Chang, an award-winning investigative reporter.

The documentary is available for viewing here: https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/film/abacus/

PA3 Virtual Wine Tasting

Dear PA3 members,

It has been over a year since we held our last wine tasting event. Recalling the fun of that event, and undaunted by Covid-19, we are organizing a virtual wine tasting event for the evening of July 7. We have arranged with a local liquor store to make available for purchase at moderate cost a selection of four wines. Via Zoom, a sommelier will guide us as we enjoy these wines from the comfort of our homes. Complementary cheese courses are identified and optional. Details on how to purchase the wine, the recommended cheeses, and instructions for the call may be found below.

Hoping to share a glass with you, and with kind regards,

Tom

One of our members has arranged with Public, the liquor store on Witherspoon St., to do a wine tasting for us. Our certified sommelier for the evening will be Sebastian Koncurat who has 20 years of experience in the wine and culinary industries. The 4 wines offered for tasting are in the link below.  For full description of wines offered, please email Mo for a PDF.

Public asks that we each buy our wine by 6:00 p.m., this coming Monday, June 29. The link is here.

Public offers free delivery to the following zip codes: 08502, 08504, 08525, 08528, 08534, 08536, 08540, 08542, 08553, and 08558.  If you live outside these zip codes, you can still participate if you order online and pick up at the store.

Public does not sell cheese but can recommend some that would pair well with each of the wines:

1. Piave Vecchio - Veneto, Cow milk. Medium hard. Good pairing with the Breganze Pinot Grigio

2. Pecorino Romano - Sheep milk. Medium hard firm, slightly salty. Origin: Lazio, suggested to accompany the Prosecco.

3. Stella Fontinella, Cow Milk, sweet and spicy,  hint of sharpness.  Ideally for the Apassimento Pasqua red blend

4. Parmigiano,  Cow milk, Emilia Romana,  hard and firm. Suggested for the Valtellina Nebbiolo Sassela

Again, please email Mo with any questions: mochen1746@outlook.com.
