First Friday Lunch - March 7th, 2014 - Nimisha Barton / History Department

Join us for First Fridays, a monthly recurring event for undergraduate and graduate Princeton alumni, graduate students, and parents.  On the first Friday of each month, area alumni and their guests will meet to enjoy a prix fixe luncheon at the Nassau Club in downtown Princeton.  As a special bonus for PA3, a Princeton University PhD candidate will present his/her work to the group in this informal setting.  Topics vary monthly and are always interesting!

On March 7th, we will be joined by Nimisha Barton, a sixth year graduate student in the History Department.  Nimisha will discuss with us her research on gender and immigration in France between 1900 and 1940.  She will discuss how France became the foremost immigrant country between the world wars, why the French welcomed and even encouraged immigration until recently, and why immigrant women were especially desired during this period.

Specially priced at $25/person (or $30 if you choose not to pay
PA3's annual dues), lunch includes three courses, a complementary beverage (wine, beer, soft drink) and coffee/tea. Pre-registration is preferred.

>> Looking forward to seeing you...in your orange and black! <<

ARB's Romeo and Juliet is choreographed by Artistic Director Douglas Martin.
Based on Shakespeare's tragic story, and set to Prokofiev's passionate score, the ballet features 30 dancers, beautiful sets, and stunning costumes.

What the critics have said:

"The duets between Juliet and Romeo - in particular, the critical balcony scene - are choreographed, and were executed, with the combination of rapture and conviction, that quality of being genuine, that is necessary to make the audience feel what the dancers feel, and to respond with the cathartic release that prompts appreciative, as opposed to obligatory, applause."
-- Jerry Hochman, Critical Dance

"ARB's production of Romeo and Juliet was an outstanding example of dance being perfectly adapted to dramatic interpretation, with the ARB dancers in full command of their art."
-- Marina Kennedy, Broadway World

American Repertory Ballet will present an evening of ballets inspired by the 20th century works of Sergei Diaghilev's revolutionary Ballets Russes. The ambitious program features: the premiere of Artistic Director Douglas Martin's Firebird, set to a compelling score by Stravinsky, Martin's
Rite of Spring, also set to music by Stravinsky, and Kirk Peterson's
Afternoon of a Faun, set to Debussy's provocative score.

What the critics have said:

Kirk Peterson's
Afternoon of a Faun
"[Peterson's] Faun retains its setting of a Grecian idyll, but the characters, a faun that is half-human/half-beast and a flirtatious nymph, interact with more tender innocence than Nijinsky's originals, which caused a scandal at the 1912 premiere in Paris with their eroticism." He goes on to say, "Peterson's movements seem like the natural expression of Debussy's heated music....a re-interpretation with "stunning impact."
-- Tony Angarano, The Courant

Douglas Martin's Rite of Spring
"Part sentimental tribute and part screwball comedy, Martin's Rite avoids primitivist clichés and, in gender parity, it manages to find a concept still radical enough to make audiences squirm."
-- Robert Johnson, The Star-Ledger

"Mr. Martin's choreography fills the stage...an indescribable potpourri that work together because they fit both Mr. Martin's concept and the Stravinsky score...a tribute to Mr. Martin's choreographic ability."
-- Jerry Hochman, Critical Dance

Join us after the show...
for a special talk-back with choreographers Douglas Martin and Kirk Peterson!
Lockwood Lobby of McCarter Theatre, directly following the performance.
